Infant Swimming Resources Self-Rescue program teaches children how to survive if they were to reach the water alone. ISR lessons are one-on-one and customized to the developmental level of each child.  To learn these survival skills, children enroll in 10 minute classes, Monday-Friday for 5-7 consecutive weeks.

Infants 6 months old to around 1 year old learn to hold their breath underwater, roll onto their backs to float, rest and breathe.

Infants around 1 year of age and newly walking will learn the above-mentioned skills and be introduced to a swim with their head down and eyes open. They will be taught to access a nearby pool side or stairs via a swim, but if in the middle of the pool they will learn to roll onto their backs to float until safety arrives.

Toddlers comfortably walking and older children (up to six years) learn to hold their breath underwater, swim with their head down and eyes open, roll onto their backs to float, rest and breathe, and roll back over to resume swimming until they reach the side of the pool and can crawl out. In short, they learn the entire swim-float-swim sequence to safety.

Once a child is ISR skilled but before completion of the course, they will complete a "summer clothes" lesson wearing light clothing, shoes and a regular diaper (if applicable) and a "winter clothes" lesson wearing full snow gear and boots. 83% of drownings happen when a child is fully clothed, so ISR believes it is important to practice their newfound skills in these different scenarios under the supervision of their instructor.

Upon completion of the program, parents are welcome to join their child and instructor in the water for a lesson on how to continue practicing these skills safely at home.

The course is taught at the James L. McKeown Boys & Girls Club of Woburn

Address: 1 Charles Gardner Lane, Woburn, MA 01801

Please Note: When you sign up for lessons, you are signing up for 5-7 WEEKS of lessons at $175 per week.  Lessons begin on May 16th and end roughly on July 1st.  Because availability is limited, to hold your place we require full payment of 5 weeks $875 in advance.  Some children will take a few extra weeks to complete the course, or the course may be extended due to illness, weather, etc. in these cases we will hold your time slot and charge you the weekly rate of $175, at the start of each additional week.

We are passionate about providing children of all economic backgrounds the tools they need to be safe around water.  If the $875 is cost prohibitive we have many scholarship programs to help families afford the course. We have never had a child not be able to attend due to price, so please call 617-970-1514 if the cost is holding you back from enrolling your child.
